smooth.talk is a live, in-browser voice coach. Practice for presentations, interviews, calls, or just get a read on habits like rushing or over-using filler words. Press Start a Session, allow microphone access, and start speaking.
What it tracks
- Volume β loudness in dB, with a target range you can tune in Settings.
- Speed β words per minute over a rolling 15-second window.
- Vocal variety β pitch range, to flag monotone delivery.
- Pauses β counts intentional pauses (good for emphasis and breath).
- Fillers β flags um, uh, like, basically, you know, etc.
- Score β a quick grade based on time spent in your target ranges.
Tips
- Use Chrome (or another Chromium-based browser) for full features. Other browsers can still show volume and pitch, but not WPM, fillers, or pauses.
- Tweak thresholds in Settings to match your voice and the kind of speaking you're practicing.
- Try Delayed Auditory Feedback (with headphones) to slow yourself down β the slight echo forces deliberate pacing.
- Enable Vibrate on alert for discreet feedback during calls.
Privacy
smooth.talk has no backend, no accounts, no analytics, and no third-party trackers. It's a single static page hosted at smooth.talk.
- Volume and pitch are analyzed entirely on-device using the Web Audio API. Audio for these metrics never leaves your browser.
- Speech transcription (used for WPM, fillers, and pauses) uses your browser's built-in Web Speech API. In Chrome and other Chromium browsers, this means audio is sent to the browser vendor's speech-recognition service (Google) for transcription. If you'd rather not have that, leave Speech Recognition disabled or use a browser without it β volume and pitch will still work.
- Session history is stored only in your browser's localStorage. Clear it any time from the Session History panel, or by clearing site data in your browser.
- The microphone is only active while a session is running. Stop the session to release it.
